What is RallyCross?

RallyCross Image

RallyCross is the most widespread and readily accessible form of extreme dirt motorsport in the Sports Car Club of America, and the perfect place to see if you have what it takes to power slide your way to victory. RallyCross is like our “Solo” autocross program, but on an open field, dirt, or combination of dirt and paving. Drivers attempt to set their best time on an agility course marked by cones, and cars are grouped in classes based on capability and level of modification. Courses are a little more open and speeds are a little lower that autocrosses, but the emphasis on accessibility, safety, affordability, and fun is the same as SCCA Solo.

RallyCross differs from stage rally that many have seen on television. There are no jumps or ditches, and roll cages are not required. Drivers preview the course by walking it or going on a low-speed lead-and-follow lap, rather than following the pace notes of a navigator. SCCA RallyCross also differs from European-style rallycross, where drivers race wheel-to-wheel on a track. Our events are strictly one-at-a-time competitions against the clock.  As a result, you are able to drive the event in your everyday car on the weekend and still drive to work on Monday (after a good washing).

The entry fees and equipment requirements are considerably less than those necessary to enter any other forms of performance rally, so one need only arrive at event registration with a safe hardtop vehicle and the entry fee.  The Milwaukee Region will have helmets to loan and will assist the first-time competitors with entering the appropriate class, making their way through technical inspection and finding their way around the course. Best of all, it’s great fun!

RallyCross doesn’t take the best single run like in Solo, but is a combination of multiple runs.

If you have never participated in SCCA RallyCross, don’t know the specific details or want to know more – get ready for some fun and keep reading below and check out the menus to the right (bottom on mobile) to learn more.

RallyCross Category/Classes

Stock Category
The stock category of SCCA RallyCross is the most restrictive and made up of three classes: Stock Rear Wheel Drive (SR), Stock Front Wheel Drive (SF) and Stock All Wheel Drive (SA). Cars must run on DOT-approved tires which are not marked “For competition only”, “Not for street use” or similar. There are a few minor modifications allowed, most for RallyCross-specific protection/safety, non-performance cosmetic accessories or minor performance enhancements like cat-back exhaust or drop-in air filter.  This category mirrors ‘Street Category’ in SCCA Solo (autocross).

Prepared Category
Like Stock, the Prepared Category is made up of three classes: Prepared Rear Wheel Drive (PR), Prepared Front Wheel Drive (PF) and Prepared All Wheel Drive (PA). Cars in prepared class may do anything allowed in stock, along with some additional modifications. Additional mods including allowing any tires (other than home-built studded tires) exhaust modifications, any shocks/struts and more.  This category closely mirrors ‘Street Touring Category’ in SCCA Solo (autocross).

Modified Category
In keeping with the category structure in Stock and Prepared, Modified also has three classes: Modified Rear Wheel Drive (MR), Modified Front Wheel Drive (MF) and Modified All Wheel Drive (MA). These classes see the most modifications including major weight reduction, aftermarket forced induction, and aero-devices like wings or splitters.  This category would be the closest to mirroring the ‘Modified Category’ in SCCA Solo (autocross).
